What we liked
  • 1000 lumens — noticeably brighter than most budget color bulbs
  • Kasa app is rock-solid: fast pairing, schedules and scenes that just work
  • Built-in energy monitoring shows exactly what each bulb costs to run
What we didn't
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, like everything at this price
  • No Matter or Thread support, so it's locked to the Kasa ecosystem

TP-Link’s Kasa line has quietly become the default answer to “which cheap smart bulb won’t annoy me?” The KL135 is why. Pairing takes under two minutes, the app reconnects after power cuts without drama, and schedules actually fire on time — boring virtues that most budget bulbs somehow fumble.

It’s also brighter than the field. At 1000 lumens it can genuinely serve as a room’s main light, where most sub-twenty-dollar color bulbs top out as decoration. Whites tune from warm candlelight to cool daylight, colors are saturated, and the built-in energy monitor scratches the nerd itch of seeing per-bulb power draw.

The compromises are about the future, not the present. There’s no Matter or Thread, so if you’re building a cross-brand smart home on one protocol, look elsewhere. And it’s 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, which is standard here but worth knowing before setup day. As a standalone bulb in the Kasa ecosystem, though, this is the one to beat.
