Dynamic broadcast mics like the SM7B are famous for sounding great and being absurdly gain-hungry. Budget interfaces run out of clean gain long before the mic is loud enough, and the last 10dB of their range is where the hiss lives.

The Cloudlifter sits between the mic and the interface and adds +25dB of clean, transparent gain — you stop cranking the interface into its noisy floor and just get a strong signal. There’s one switch involved and it’s on your interface: enable phantom power. The CL-1 uses it but doesn’t pass it through, which also makes it safe for ribbon mics.

I own one and it’s permanent desk infrastructure now. The honest caveat: it’s $149 for a single job, and if your interface already has enough clean gain, it’s a very nice paperweight. Check your interface’s gain range before buying.
